Kumbaya is believed to derive from the Gullah language spoken by some Black inhabitants of of the lower coastal region spanning from southern North Carolina down to northern Florida.
Contrary to the usage of the term as pertaining to living harmoniously, the word was part of the Black spiritual song meaning Come By Here. The spiritual represents a calling to the Lord by people in distress.
